The majority of parents in our sample affirmed that they have the digital tools and support to enable their children’s remote learning. The good news is, these efforts appear to be working. Since last spring, Chicago Public Schools and the City of Chicago have worked to close the digital divide by providing a device for all students who need one and creating a no-cost internet service package for families through Chicago Connected. Specific attention was also given to parents of diverse learners with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans. In this survey, parents were asked about the frequency and methods/modes of communication, as well as overall satisfaction. Many said that communication with teachers in the Spring 2020 semester had been inconsistent or nonexistent. In Kids First Chicago’s summer 2020 focus groups, parents raised school communication as a critical area of focus. While more indicated they would consider a return to school or a hybrid-model when compared to our July 2020 survey, parents still feel conflicted over a complete return to in-person learning option. The survey findings have sometimes validated and sometimes refuted our personal experiences - underscoring just how complicated life and learning during a global pandemic truly is.ĬPS asked all families with children in Pre-Kindergarten, special education cluster programs, and elementary schools to indicate their preferred learning model in October 2020. So, as part of our ongoing series, Parent-led Solutions to Education Recovery, we enlisted NORC at the University of Chicago to survey CPS parents. While learning remains mostly virtual, we wanted to better understand how other families are experiencing the school year, including both areas of satisfaction and frustration.
